Damp proofing is a type of moisture control applied to building walls and floors to prevent moisture from passing into the interior spaces. Dampness problems are among the most frequent problems encountered in residences.

We offer a full range of damp proofing services and due to the nature of damp it can access any building and in a wide variety of ways. Some of the most common forms of damp problems are rising damp, lateral penetrating damp, penetrating damp, and blocked cavity walls each cause needs to be treated accordingly.

There are a number of ways that damp proofing can be carried out, but the following methods are the most common treatment required which may include a combination of methods.

  • Installation of a chemical injected damp proof course together with associated re-plastering
  • A structural waterproofing system incorporating a damp proof membrane and possible sump pump.
  • The use of conventional cementitious tanking system.

Types of damp

Penetrating Damp

Rain penetration in brickwork (penetrating damp) can happen to almost any building. This is caused by rainwater seeping through walls, likely due to a defective roof or cracked brickwork. In extreme cases, the rain will penetrate through the wall and be visible on the interior of the property.

Rising Damp

Rising damp is a form of dampness that affects property walls. It occurs when moisture from the ground is effectively sucked up tiny tubes in the brick. This is also known as Salt Damp, as the water contains salt. You may see white salt stains appearing on the walls.

How To Treat Damp

Finding the source of the Damp is key to ensuring that it doesn’t return. The first step is identifying the type of dampness you have. Without experience, it can be very tricky to understand how to establish this.

You must get to the root of the problem, eradicate the dampness and mould and then take preventative measures to be sure that it doesn’t return in future.

Effective damp proofing treatment requires removal of the wall plaster to approximately one metre or higher (depending on the salts within the masonry and several other factors). In addition to this, installation of a new damp proof course within the damp walls will help to provide protection for the property.

Damp Proofing

Signs of damp

Damp proofing is designed to keep out soil moisture in your home. Structural dampness is the presence of unwanted moisture in the structure of a building. It can result from outside intrusion, or from inside the structure.

It’s important to pay attention to the grouting and sealant for signs of black mould. Look for signs of damage to the walls and ceiling of your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rising damp is always a serious problem. As the source of moisture is the ground itself, rising damp will only worsen without remedial action. Even if the damage is minimal and ignorable now, it will only worsen.

Yes! Correct diagnosis is the key to the installation of a new damp-proof course. A new damp-proof course combined with replastering the damaged walls is a very effective way of fixing rising damp.

Dehumidifiers reduce humidity levels by drawing in moisture from the air. They can be used as part of a condensation minimisation strategy but will not help stop rising damp. They may mask the problem by dealing with the symptoms (dampness in the home), but they will not stop it from occurring.

Damp proofing is a cost factor that varies based on what type of damp it is. One reason for these high prices is that each condition has a different cause and different treatments – so, depending on your diagnosis, the costs vary widely.  Interior rising damp can range from R760 to R830 per meter whereas the cost of damp proofing to the exterior rising damp would range from R600 to R680 per meter. The damp proofing cost will also depend on the types of damp on your property.

Since there are so many causes and solutions for dampness, the timeframe of the damp proof course of your home to resolve it can vary. Certain small jobs may take as little as 1-2 hours. You might have a large job. For example, a brand-new damp-proof course may take a few days to install in your home.

The use of cement in a water system improves the water system when it comes to damp proofing your home. It provides a reasonable slope for the roof of your home for water to run off and avoids high damp proofing costs in future when you have had a damp proof course. The cost of damp proofing proves to be of value because it is durable and sustainable and used to prevent the problem from returning anytime soon. It repairs any cracks or voids already present in roof slabs on your property.
